hi I’m ED-SKaR and due to the relativesuccess of my 3d printed magazine video last week? last month? However long agoit was, I’ve decided to go ahead and do some more.
Now quite a few people postedin the comments what they wanted to see and the two things that really popped upas being the most popular were primarily the (Foam Blast) drum Springs the constant forceSprings rather than the rectangle profile Springs like the jet blasterskatana magazine or the Monkee Mods spring and also the one specificmagazine that kept on popping up was the Kabanana? Kabana? The bent one.
So I’ve got one of those.
If I was a proper youtuber I’d have an introduction right herebut I’m not so I don’t.
My first video was 42 minutes long and the number onecomment by far even more than ‘Hey let’s have drum Springs’ was ‘Why is it so longgee whiz I’m not watching all of that'(!) well the reason why it was 42 minuteslong is because there was an awful lot of information to cover and this videothere is still an awful lot of information to cover but maybe not quiteas much so let’s just skip straight ahead to the top down view and getstarted.
So first of all this is the Kabana magazine which is very much the Katobu magazine with a slight curve to it.
Nowone of the things I kept on going on about with the 3d printed magazines allof them in fact was the anti rotation of the follower making sure that thefollower stays parallel to the direction of the darts being pushed up keepingthat as level as possible at all times.
However with a curved magazinethat then becomes a different question because your follower needs to staystraight for this bit but then it does need to curve when it comes to this areaso so that it doesn’t bind up or jam down here.
Which is something I want totest and have a look at.
Also of note is that this magazine is the first onethat’s printed upright with the flat surface at the bottom being printedon the printbed and then the layers are running in this direction which inmy one of my follow-up videos from the first main 3d printed magazine videos Ididn’t actually cover this orientation of layers.
There are some advantages andsome disadvantages to that system the disadvantage is that because the layersare cutting through the magazine it becomes very easy for a knock to theside to just snap the entire magazine in half whereas some of the other ones theyhave some layers going through the front and back or the sides maybe those sidesare weak but the other side will keep at least some strength so a knock mightcrack it but it won’t shatter it completely whereas this if you hit itright and if you split one of these layers the whole base of the magazine isgonna disappear maybe even so much snapped in half.
The one real advantage of printing it in this orientation as a single piece is Idon’t need to glue this together I don’t need to attach this together in any wayshape or form I don’t need to worry about glue this is now easier to constructthan the Kathanha.
So this now goes to be the easiest magazine to construct andthat is big news because the follower of the kotoba magazine was one that Ireally really was fond of because the follower was so good without anti rotation.
The follower has actually been redesigned so this piece of the followeris from the outside very similar to the original but from the inside is somewhatdifferent so we’ve still got four rails for contact points along the outside soit should be good for anti-rotation in fact as good as the original but insidewe’ve got these two circles, a slot through it and a slot from the side now thekeen-eyed among you will realize that that means that this is going to be goodfor a drum spring.
Hey would you look at that almost like it’s designed to gothere(!) but this base plate is not for that.
This base plate fills up the middlethe two pegs go in so why is there a separate piece why is the follower twoparts when it originally wasn’t.
Well that’s because this is going topartially retain a rectangle profile spring such as this.
This is theMonkee Mod spring.
So that goes through just like that, and then that assembles, clicks into place which is a nice addition I haven’t had any problems withseparating springs except for the jet blasters Katana spring: my anonymousbenefactor Rat Man did point out that he had a couple of cases where the springon a katana magazine would slide into the magazine release notch and jam upthe magazine so he’d have to get a screwdriver and poke the spring backinto place to free it up.
Completely impossible with this now that it’s fixedinto place after that this just goes inside and then the base plate goes onthe bottom and the base plate is very much the same.
One of the cons is thatit’s very difficult to the point of being almost impossible to get insidethis magazine to sand it down so if you have any print deformations and there’sminor one just up here so what you end up having to do is to sand theever-living feath out of the follower to get it to run smoothly and this is wherethis video unfortunately has a bit of a problem which was my fault in my firstvideo I made sure that each of the four magazines I tested was printed in adifferent color filament and I started to do the same with this one butunfortunately I kind of got sidetracked and I’ve printed quite a few of thesmall pieces in the same color which wouldn’t be too much of a problem exceptthe color that I’ve accidentally printed everything in is black which doesn’tshow up particularly well on camera carrying on with the Katobu stylemagazine this is a redesigned follower for the straight magazine which usesthe drums spring and the follower piece itself is identical to the top piece ofthe one I printed for the curved magazine but the secondary piece is actuallyprinted in two halves so when you put it in place your drum spring in and thepegs on these two pieces go into the drum spring like this and then that allgets glued into place and you have fixed your drum spring to the follower whichis a pretty cool idea it’s actually holds it nice and strong as with thefeed lips on the original Katobu magazine there is a hole here for a pinthe magazine as well has a slot cut into the side of it which fits the tail ofthe drum spring so now on to the Kathanha magazine and you’ll notice that thisis in fact the exact same Kathanha magazine as I had in my previous videoexcept that this time I’ve hacked a hole into the side because there is a smallpanel that the top of the drum spring hooks onto (and if I get rid of this spring for now) and that holds the (drum)spring in quite nicely now the reason why I’ve hacked a hole into theside is because I assembled this fully and glued it together before I put thisspring in fact I’ve done this weeks ago by this point what you need to do toassemble it for a drum spring properly is put on the spring before you glue thetwo sides together so if you do that and you don’t need to hack out the side youcan just slot the spring on and glue the two sides of the magazine together thenyou pull the spring all the way to the bottom and hook on the follower nowfor anyone paying attention you may also recognize that the follower has changedfrom the original design that I showed in my first video and the primary changein fact the only real change that I can see is that it’s a lot taller and that’sone of the things that I criticized about the original follower is that itwas quite short it wasn’t very good with anti rotation so making this taller andlike half again as tall particularly this anti-rotation tab isnow twice as long that’s a massive advantage and does give this a muchbetter chance of feeding smoothly but this just has an open slot that thespring rests inside so there’s no peg or pin that goes through this particulardesign but that just runs like that and finally another vorpal magazine and inthis case there’s only two additional parts that I need to talk about there’sa second design of feed lip ware which just has a slot and a raised platformsort of thing very similar to the Kathanha magazine where the tail of your drumspring just slides in you need to clip off a little bit at the end becausethere’s a massive tail and you don’t really need all that much and so thatanchors the base of the spring to the top of the magazine and there is alsothis roller which again printed in black unfortunately sorry about that which is easier to do when you have afriend so this roller piece holds the drum spring in place but it also meansthat as the follower goes up and down instead of the spring rubbing againstthe inside of the follower as with the other styles of follower for this typeof spring because this roller will move you have a lot less friction hopefullyon the of the spring rubbing against PLA parts which would cause an awful lot ofwear now how much wear that actually causes is difficult to say but the factthat this is a single extra part and just needs a a metal pin or nail to gothrough to act as an axle it’s not that much more difficult than assembling avocal magazine in the first place even with proper solvents and stuff it gets alot easier than I had in my first video so there we gothat goes in like that I mean I need to trim off the tail of this spring but that’llconnect like that you pull it down the same with the Kathanha magazine and youslot the roller into the follower like so and it looks like I need to send thisfollower a bit more but that’s fine.
so that’s the magazines that I’m usingtoday is so I’ll pass over to myself in the future when I got these fully built the Kathanha magazine with a drumspring and this works really rather well actually this is still the same magazinebody as I was using in my first video so the same things apply the slightlylonger darts anything above 38mm just like that will cause a problem and that is afactor but it’s a factor I’ve already discussed so what you might be able tosee on camera.
so as I’m loading the magazine thefollowers pushing down and it’s leaving a strip of the spring down the side ofthe magazine which is how constant force springs work and it’s unrolling at thebottom to leave this in place and it’s anchored up here at the top so now atthis point we can see is that the follow has gone all the way down into thislower section and you can just about see the spring all the way down to there nowsomeone in one of the comments I believe on reddit posted that you don’t actuallyneed the base plate when you’re using a constant floor spring and that’s trueyou don’t need one to make it function I’d recommend having a base platebecause it prevents dirt getting in and if you drop it the prevents it fromgetting damaged and also it prevents you from overloading the magazine and losingyour spring what I will do is I’ll just give it one extra dart there so you can seethe followers poking at the bottom and it’s already starting to veer off tothis side if you were to load one more dart I’m sure that that spring would’vejust coil all over the place and cause you absolute mad problems but as longas you keep it to that point you don’t need the base plate but I’m still goingto use one in my testing continuing on the story of constant force Springs theVorpal magazine here works really well with the constant for springwho’da thought you know that the spring that it was designed to work with itworks with quite well (!) it’s it feeds and fits just as well asany other vorpal magazine in fact this as well better than my original vorpalmagazine because this one I put together with a solvent rather than the supergluebut because of the constant force spring this seems to feed a little bit fasterthan the other Monkee Mod spring so when you’re almost fully filled with a rectangle profile spring you get the most force and when thefollowers at the top you have the least force over the travel of thatdistance whereas with the constant force spring you have constant force all thewell which means that with certain systems particularly with high rates offire when you get to those last few rounds you may come across the positionwhere you skip around and if the pusher in an auto system like that hits a dartwhile it’s not quite clear the top say when it’s in that kind of position wellwe can get problems similar to what I had in my first video although that wascaused by something else whereas with this this is going to feeda consistent rate all the way to the very top so there are some advantages toconstant for Springs so on the vorpal magazine the tail of the constant forspring just hooks into the feed lip and you can actually put it in there andthen glue the feed lip to the side of the magazine and what I found is thatputting the drum wheel onto this spring before you assemble the rest of themagazine actually helps because you can get that drum on to the follower muchmore easily than you can get the spring onto the drum and then the drum onto thefollower.
so conversely the Kabana Kabanana magazine doesn’t use the (foam Blast) constant force spring in fact it can’t use the constantforce spring because the constant force spring runs down the side of themagazine and has to run in a straight line it cannot curve in a differentorientation to the way it’s designed to and so as soon as you have a curvedshell magazine you have to use a rectangle profile spring or some otherform of spring but that then that still leads into theproblems or the worry of anti-rotation now a praised the original Katobumagazine follower for being very good with anti rotation this followersurprised me by actually being able to feed around and this is only a gentlecurve but this much tilt was causing other magazines to completely stopworking kind of that angle was causing other mags to stop working whereas inthis magazine even that angle doesn’t seem to affect it all that much thespring rubs against the back corner here and so when you get to when the followergets to about here there’s this a slight spot here where it has where the springis catching and so the follower doesn’t push up as well however even that saidit still pushes up and it’s still relatively consistent and I haven’t hadany miss feeds because of that the one thing I do want to point out about thismagazine and it’s because it was printed in one piece there is aversion of this magazine that’s printed in two pieces that you glue together andit’s printed on its side much like the Kathanha magazine was which would giveyou the advantage and disadvantage of that orientation of printing the holesfor the magazine catches which actually seems to have come out pretty well and Inote that the this magazine actually now has the second magazine catch that thekatana magazine has so there’s something going on somewhere one of the builds outthere somewhere is using a lower magazine catch but no idea what it isthe keen eyed among you will also notice that this is a lot smoother than any ofmy other prints even into the point of being just about as smooth as my vorpalmagazine which is printed flat and the reason for that is I extended myprinting time to accommodate for this type of this type of print now when it’son the print bed there’s a good chance to as it gets higher and higher that theadhesion at the print bed won’t be sufficient and as the nozzles movingbackwards and forwards rips it off and you get a failed print3/4 of the way through and I also wanted to make sure that the inside of themagazine was as smooth as possible there’s no way for me to get in and sandit so I did that by slowing the print down all of these magazines have printedon basically the same print settings except for this piece which was printedmuch much slower a quarter of the speed to put it into perspective so that’s onething to consider slowing down your print speed and maybe even increasingyour nozzle temperature by 5 or 10 degrees can increase the strength andthere’s other settings as well that can help you out in getting a nice strongprint but this is still printed in PLA I’m quite gone to ABS yet but the slowprint worked in this case and I’ve got a nice strong magazine so after that you may be of the opinionthat this particular Stryfe is the real loser of this video however I wouldargue that point because while this Stryfe has done very poorly in thisvideo and the last with its stock cage stock Motors stock flywheels and runningon all of seven volts it is still managing to decapitate worker darts sothe real loser of this video worse even than this dodgy Stryfe hacked togetherout of bits is the worker dart the most common half-length art in the hobby atthe moment and it kind of makes me sad because the worker dart was at thebeginning really rather good the design of the head is very good the shape of itand the the ‘worker gap’ as it’s been known give some aerodynamic advantagesbut unfortunately the quality of these darts has dropped drasticallyparticularly with the gluing on of the heads and the cutting of the foam thefoam ends up being inconsistent lengths and the heads glued on it sitting inconsistent height and the glue sometimes isn’t enough to even hold the head onthe magazines on the other hand which is why you’re here it’s in the video titleand thumbnail after all well look at these two first cuz these are justslight variant variations on magazines that I’ve looked at previously in factthis is the exact same one they both work really well with the (Foam Blast) drum springthe constant for spring they feed really smoothly and I had no issues ormalfunctions attributed to the magazines now I did have some malfunctions withsome of the with all three magazines actuallyin testing with this particular gun however it’s because in the last videoeveryone complained about me using only worker darts and “Oh hey this type of dartis better” and “Oi, this other type of dart is better” as well I have like 400worker darts so I may as well test them and as I’ve said they’re the most common dart inthe community so it makes sense that if you’re picking up darts off of theground it’s most likely gonna be a worker dart which is why I keepmentioning the fact that some worker darts are ridiculous long and will jam in some magazines the reason why certain darts jammed in the Retaliator is because they have accustrike heads not worker darts at all Workerdarts generally feed very well in this as do many other type of darts but the Accustrike head just doesn’t feed very well in this particular retaliator butthere were no jams or malfunctions attributed to the magazines themselvesor the magazine spring now mention certain advantages of the drum springover the rectangle profile spring and one of those is capacity now the katanamagazine Springs can feed 15 rounds maybe 16 or 17 if you build the if youdesign the magazine right the Monkee Mod Springs can quite happily goup to 20 maybe 21 and the maximum capacity that you can get out of amagazine with a constant force spring is not reliant on the tension of theconstant force spring like this with this rectangle profile spring it isbased on its overall length when it’s pulled out in terms of the difficulty offitting them they’re not really any more difficult than a rectangle profilespring rectangle profile spring take off the base plate throw in the follower ofthe spring put the base plate back up very easy with these depending on whichdesign you usually hook over the tail of the constant force spring at the topslide it into the follower and then in most cases you can actually build themagazine around the follower at the top certainly the case with the vorpal andKatobu magazine slightly more difficult to fit they follow up on the Kathanhamagazine because of the way that shell puts together because it uses thedovetails you can’t put the shell together when the follower is in placeso you fit the spring then you glue the magazine body together you thenuse maybe a coat hanger or a piece of string or something pull hook the thespring pull it down fit the follower and then you let it up evenly if you justlet it go and you can cause problems and you can get the spring jumping out andcoiling itself in horrible ways so don’t do that all one trick that I did was toactually hook the spring at the base of the magazine fill it with darts then getthe follower on and put the spring in place and take all the darts out and itcomes up as it normally would bonus points for actually having amagazine fully loaded when you’ve finished assembling it but realisticallyfitting the constant force Springs is not that difficult at all and neither ofthese are any more difficult in fact building this magazine with a constantforce spring was far easier than building this magazine which I usedsuper glue for and you don’t need a base button you don’t need to put the baseplate on this either although I do recommend you put the base plate on youcan extend the magazine as the Kathanha magazine does with just just by takingthat cross section and having an extra piece that you put on just to hold thefollower in line that’s all it needs so doing away with constant for Springs andgoing back to rectangle profile Springs this feebs remarkably well and farbetter than I ever thought it would now there is and I’ll see if I can get thelight on it that seems to be a layer skip so just everything in that linejust slightly over to the side and that’s a relatively common problem withmid quality 3d printers that haven’t been set up right.
and justthat last round sometimes doesn’t come out correctly when you’ve got two orthree rounds in the magazine you can take them out and sometimes the followwill catch just before it can feed that top around in although seems to bebehaving itself now what I will do is push down the foot hold it in place likethat get a file in there and see what I can do but that’s the only realdisadvantage of this particular magazine is that allactually that’s come out you can see it much more clearly this line here anyI’ll just hold it like that so you can see but that’s a fault with thisparticular print if I was to print this again it might come out perfectly or itmight come out with this similar flaw somewhere else and if it happened in themiddle there’s nothing I can do about that but with the adjusted printsettings to print the shell of this extremely slowly the inside is actuallyfar smoother than I ever thought it would be maybe my printer can do betterthan I think it can because I run it too fast most of the time I think that’slikely(!) but the follower was just a little bitof sanding like all of the followers have runs really smoothly and even goesaround this slight curve with no problemsamazing in my opinion the fact that straight straight wall ammunitionparallel sides not tapered at all can go around the corner and not have thefollower bind up particular when it’s 3d printed I said this in my first reviewwhen I looked at this one that the follow was a very the followerwas a very good design well this proves just how good that design is even thoughthis is a an updated version of it one other thing to say about this is thatbecause the top of the magazine is reversible and has magazine catch upboth sides what you can do is feed it in this way around and yes it even worksbecause from there on up it’s reversible and it’s only this curve that mattersand apparently it doesn’t matter and even the dart heads don’t rub oranything so ultimately the two things that people really wanted to know waswhat about constant force Springs: yeah they’re great.
and what about the Kabanamagazine: yeah that’s pretty good too.
and all of these magazines work really wellnow they all have advantages and disadvantages dependent on the designand how they’re put together and the shape of the follower and all of therest of it and hopefully I’ve talked at length about that and hopefully Ihaven’t bored you too much Are you snoring at the back? so which ofthese is the best which one wins well I can’t really say that any one magazinewins overall because what you can say well magazines just hold the ammunitionand you put it in the gun and shoot it and that’s all magazines are for so thisshould be the best for that but there are different aspects to the magazinesand with all of these magazines there are pros and cons if you’re a seriouscompetitive nerfer and you’re looking at some magazines for half darts I’drecommend the Vorpal magazine with a constant for spring you can go all theway up to probably around 30 rounds I haven’t tested exactly how long thesprings are but you can go up to a very high capacity and with a constant forcehigh capacity doesn’t crush the darts any more than a short magazine does soyou can have the magazine as long as the physical size of the size of themagazine works for your loadout the Katobu magazine comes in a variety ofshapes and sizes and I highly recommend these as well because the follower is sogood for anti rotation and the updates to the follower and make this evenbetter and it’s a fight between these two as to which one is actually theeasiest this one’s harder to print though you have to turn down your speedand take your time printing the shell but once it’s once that printed sand thefollower a bit and it’s basically together but this one still feeds verywell now if you’re going for a certain look if you’re mid doing an athleticbuild rather than a competitive build some of these matica magazines lookdifferent from each other mixing colored filaments and I’m a fanof the purple choosing the right color for your build having a different shapeis part of that so picking the body of the magazine based on looks all of thesemagazines work in most things certainly some of the magazines in very tight magwells can cause problems but if you really want a particular look you cansound either the outside of the magazine on the inside of the magazine well tomake it work and now I have an entire loadouts worth of completely differentmagazines but whichever one you choose thank you very much for watching I’mED-SKaR I always will be I wonder what it would take to put a curve in avorpal magazine.
